Zakat: A Trust Honoured

Zakat is not simply a donation, it's a right owed by those who have to those who are entitled. We treat that responsibility with the gravity it deserves.

What Is Zakat

One of the five pillars

Zakat is an obligatory act of worship in Islam, a fixed portion of a Muslim's wealth given annually to those who qualify, once that wealth meets or exceeds the Nisab threshold and has been held for a full lunar year.

It purifies wealth, redistributes resources within the community, and is treated in the Qur'an not as charity given at one's discretion, but as a right owed. Al Amaanah Aid exists to help ensure that right reaches exactly who it's meant for.

This is general guidance. For your specific obligation, calculation, and any questions of fiqh, please consult a qualified scholar or use the calculator below.

Who Zakat Is For

  • 1 The poor (Al-Fuqara)
  • 2 The needy (Al-Masakin)
  • 3 Zakat administrators
  • 4 Those whose hearts are to be reconciled
  • 5 Freeing those in bondage
  • 6 Those in debt
  • 7 In the cause of Allah
  • 8 The stranded traveller
"Zakah expenditures are only for [these categories]... an obligation imposed by Allah." — Qur'an 9:60

Zakat FAQ

What's the difference between Zakat and Sadaqah?+

Zakat is an obligatory annual payment for Muslims whose wealth meets the Nisab threshold, calculated at a fixed rate. Sadaqah is voluntary charity, given in any amount, at any time, with no fixed calculation.

How do I know if I've reached the Nisab threshold?+

Nisab is typically based on the current value of gold or silver and changes with market prices. Use the Hisab calculator above for an up-to-date calculation, or consult a knowledgeable scholar for your specific situation.

Can I pay my Zakat to Al Amaanah Aid directly?+

Yes. Use the Hisab calculator above to work out your Zakat and complete payment in the same flow, we then ensure it's disbursed only to eligible beneficiaries under the categories defined in the Qur'an.

How does Al Amaanah Aid choose who receives Zakat?+

Beneficiaries are assessed against the eligibility categories outlined in Qur'an 9:60, with need verified before disbursement. We publish yearly totals and beneficiary counts for transparency.

Is my Zakat kept separate from other donations?+

Yes. Zakah funds are ring-fenced separately from general donations and Sadaqah, to ensure they are used only for eligible recipients as required.
